LIVE JAZZ & DANCING with Chief Cherry & His Red Beans & Rice SWINGIN’ JAZZ BAND!
“Swing” by for an afternoon of high energy live jazz and dancing with Shannon “Chief” Cherry and His Red Beans & Rice swing jazz band on Sunday, Nov. 5th, 2pm at the Rockledge Country Club.
Shannon Cherry sings, plays saxophones and writes the original songs for Chief Cherry and His Red Beans & Rice. They are working on their debut album, endorsed and promoted by the late and great Miles Davis’ brother, Joseph Haynes Davis, which will culminate 20 years of swinging in Florida.
Mark Sunderland will be on Trumpet, Major Bailey on bass trombone, Corey Powell on trombone, Christian Ryan on flute & sax, Mike Telesmanick on Piano, Ron Pirtle on Bass and Ritchie Mola on Drums. Plus vocalists Britty Bardez-Tedtmann and Megan Roxane Shea.
Shannon “Chief” Cherry started this band in 1997 with some fellow college classmates at Brevard Community College in Cocoa, Florida in Marion Scott’s band room. The members have changed throughout the years to include some local and national legends, but in 20 years, one thing has remained constant: Swinging music.
Shannon started the band during the neo-swing revival of the late 1990’s to play gigs specifically for dancers during the short lived swing dance craze. Later this pursuit would foster a deeper love and appreciation for more kinds of jazz, and the band would branch out to perform other types of jazz from the eras between 1920 and 1960. Today Shannon Cherry is writing classic Swing inspired original music, very much like some of his contemporary influence: Harry Connick, Jr.
Concerts are open to the public and no reservations are needed. Admission is paid at the door, $10 for members of the Jazz Society and the Rockledge Country Club, $15 for guests, and students are free.
