Known to many music lovers around the county, piano player and entertainer Steve Kirsner and his merry band of musicians perform on February 11th, 2pm (doors open at 1pm) at the Rockledge Country Club, as part of the Space Coast Jazz Society’s series of monthly concerts. Taking full advantage of the Rockledge Country Club dance floor, Steve and the band plan to add dance numbers to their repertoire of lively sing-along tunes and familiar favorites from decades past.
While many know of Steve Kirsner and Friends because they are regulars at Heidi’s Jazz Club in Cocoa Beach, less is known about Steve Kirsner. Steve started entertaining at age seven when he wowed his 2nd grade class by playing “Swanee River” and he has been going strong ever since. At age 15, he started playing professionally as part of a high school ensemble, through dental school at pizza joint gigs, and later, during his military service, at the Eglin Air Force Base Officer’s Club.
With 21 years as a dentist under his belt, Steve retired from that profession to devote himself to a family business, and to music, which he calls “the real love of his life.” His years as a professional performer are now considerably longer than his career in dentistry.
A Florida resident since age 9, Steve has lived in Brevard County since 1994. In 1997 he began playing at the now defunct Indian River Jazz Club, where he met a number of fellow musicians with whom he still plays today. He also had a 10 year gig at the Mango Tree Restaurant and, with fellow musicians, at other venues and private parties around the county.
Steve is a Brevard treasure and a remarkable entertainer who does not read music. According to Steve, piano playing is an “automatic reflex,” and he modestly compares his innate talent to someone whistling a tune according to the right notes.
Friends and fellow musicians joining Steve on Sunday February 11th will be Dave Lewis on bass guitar, Ollie Downes on drums, Steve Mazzie on sax, Bill Boyd on trumpet and Tony Bosik on guitar. The program will be a mix of instrumental and vocal numbers guaranteed to have you singing along, tapping your toes and maybe even getting up and putting your dancing shoes to the test.
Steve and friends always deliver a lively, engaging performance. So bring your favorite squeeze and head down to the Rockledge Country Club for an afternoon of music, fun, food, laughter and dancing. Or come alone, knowing you are never alone at a Space Coast Jazz Society concert.
All concerts are open to the public and general admission is paid at the door: $10 for members of the Jazz Society and the Rockledge Country Club, $15 for non-members and guests, and free for students. Food and beverages are available for an additional cost. The Rockledge Country Club is located at 1591 S. Fiske Blvd., Rockledge, FL 32955.
