The SPACE COAST BIG BAND
and

the 2018 Space Coast Jazz Society’s Scholarship Winners
Rockledge Country Club, 1591 S. Fiske Blvd., Rockledge, FL  32955

The May Space Coast Jazz Society concert features the big sound of big band jazz. Come and experience the electrifying Space Coast Big Band, a 17-piece orchestra, led by Joel Greenblatt and comprised of some of the finest musicians throughout Central Florida.

In addition to the Big Band, the Space Coast Jazz Society will also be announcing the winners of the 2018 Jazz Scholarships.  Two scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each will be awarded to Brevard County High School seniors. The two winners will showcase their talents by performing some numbers with the band.

Joel, a professional trombonist from New York City, has studied and taught jazz for more than 40 years. He has performed at Carnegie Hall, toured with the Max Romeo Band and entertained guests of Carnival and Celebrity cruises. Since moving to Florida in 2005, Joel has started two professional jazz groups — Jazz Cats and the Space Coast Big Band.

Band members are equally as impressive. Drummer Bryan Gardenour has been playing professionally for more than 25 years. While studying at the Drummers Collective in New York City, he performed at such well known venues as Birdland, The Rainbow Room and Smalls.  He’s also played at Nashville’s infamous Ryman Auditorium and at concert venues throughout the US as the drummer for Peter Frampton’s opening act. Trumpeter Eric Wright has a Master’s Degree in music from Rutgers University and has studied with several renowned trumpet teachers, including William Fielder. Eric has performed and recorded at international music festivals, concert halls and nightclubs with artists such as Ricardo Lemvo, Chris Calloway, and Johnny Pacheco.

These highlights of a just a few of the members illustrates why the Space Coast Big Band is known for its array of musical stylings, reflective of jazz greats like Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Frank Sinatra, Glenn Miller and the modern and energetic Cherry Popping Daddies. Locally, the band performs at many private and public venues including Heidi’s Jazz Club, Eau Gallie Arts Summer Festival, and the 2016 Timucua Arts White House in Orlando, where they were the featured act. For more details – https://www.jazzcatsfl.com.

Open to the public – no reservations needed – general admission is paid at the door. $10 for members of the Space Coast Jazz Society and the Rockledge Country Club. Guests $15. Students are free. Food & drinks are available for purchase. Email Jazz@SpaceCoastJazzSociety.org if you have any questions.

Sunday, June 10th, 2pm (doors open at 1pm)
Trumpeter JOHN DEPAOLA
Rockledge Country Club, 1591 S. Fiske Blvd., Rockledge, FL  32955

The John DePaola Quartet Brings an Eclectic Program of Jazz

John has played with vocal greats and groups like Tony Bennett, Johnny Mathis, Marvin Hamlisch, Frank Sinatra, Jr., Peobo Bryson, Ray Charles, The Moody Blues, The Temptations and many others. As part of Broadway touring companies, his talent contributed to the musical success of plays like West Side Story, Hello Dolly, A Chorus Line, Chicago and 42nd Street. Locally, John performs with several symphony orchestras including The Dr. Phillips Center Jazz Orchestra, Disney and is known for several retrospective shows of legends such as Cannonball Adderley, Jerry Mulligan, Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Byrd.

A talented trio of musicians who complete the John DePaola Quartet will accompany him. Chris Rottmayer, keyboard player, is also a recording artist and composer who has performed for 25 years and worked with saxophonists Dan Jordan and Jeff Rupert. Bass player Charles Silva’s long career includes decades working with the Disney Company, performing on cruise ships and with headliners such as Rosemary Clooney, Rita Moreno, Buddy Tate, Mel Lewis and Clark Terry.  Drummer Greg Parnell’s equally impressive background includes many years on the road with The Glenn Miller Orchestra as drummer and road manager. He has also performed with legendary groups and performers such as The Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, The Nelson Riddle Orchestra, Eartha Kitt, The Mills Brothers and Della Reese. These are only selected credits of the John DePaola Quartet, who are, as John describes them, “one heck of a band.”

At age 10, Orlando-based trumpeter John DePaola went to a Pittsburgh flea market with his dad where they bought him his first trumpet. John quickly learned the musical scale and says now, “It was pretty easy to play. I went from there.” John was a natural, no doubt. As soon as he could drive, he joined a band and started playing weddings, launching a forty-year professional career that brought him to jazz festivals and venues all over the US and abroad, and now to the Space Coast Jazz Society stage.

John’s style radiates warmth and is complimented by his ability to create melodic solos. According to one of his clients, “John provides a superb musical experience that is varied and tailored to his audience. He loves what he does and this shows through in his enthusiasm and joy in performing.”

John will bring his special brand of straight-ahead jazz, his warm style and these other fine musicians to the Space Coast on June 10th for an afternoon of instrumental jazz that will include some dance numbers, Latin, Swing and Samba.  Jazz lovers, this concert is not to be missed. Sample his music here: www.johndepaolamusic.com.

All Space Coast Jazz Society concerts are open to the public and general admission is paid at the door: $10 for members of the Jazz Society and the Rockledge Country Club, $15 for non-members and guests, and no charge for students. Food and beverages are available at an additional cost. The Rockledge Country Club is located at 1591 S. Fiske Blvd., Rockledge, FL 32955. You can expect to hear Latin, swing, hard bop and blues. “I like to blend it so everything is not the same,” Ron says, “and appeal to a wide range of people.” Ron added, “If people want to dance, we would love that.”

Jazz fans may know Ron from his work around the Space Coast. He has also played around his boyhood turf of Pennsylvania and Ohio and cut a CD with the Ron Pirtle Quartet, aptly called “Getting in the Groove.” Ron has been playing music since the age of 12 when his parents gave him an electric bass guitar. He left Ohio 36 years ago and has been playing jazz on the bass in and around the Space Coast for many of those years.

Saxophonist Billy Davis has worked internationally and toured as part of the opening act for Chicago, Hall and Oats, Eric Clapton and others. Hailing from Iowa and playing with the Cedar Rapids Jazz Band, he played with national artists such as Ernie Watts, Eddie Daniels and Bob Mintzner.

Brock Wollard has played drums for more than two decades. Earlier in his career, Brock was in a band that toured around the US, Mexico and Europe before returning to Brevard to teach music and play local gigs.

Marce Palos, keyboardist from the state of Indiana, has played at hotels, venues and festivals across Florida and in other states. His trio was the resident music group at the prestigious Four Seasons Resort in Palm Beach for nine years.

Sunday, September 9th, 2pm
George Grosman & the SWING BOUTIQUE
www.GeorgeGrosman.com – or sample the music here
Rockledge Country Club, 1591 S. Fiske Blvd., Rockledge, FL  32955

You can enjoy the international flair of George Grosman and the Swing Boutique on Sunday afternoon, 2pm, September 9th on the Space Coast Jazz Society’s stage at the Rockledge Country Club.

Born in Prague, George, guitar player and vocalist, has spent the last four decades living and playing music in North America, Europe and Asia. In addition to George on rhythm guitar and vocals, the band includes John Keith on accordion, Bo Frazer on fiddle and mandolin, Phil Coe on lead guitar, and Nick Rosaci on upright bass. Jon and Bo will also provide back-up vocal support.

Grosman has lived in six different countries — Canada, the US, the Czech Republic, Israel, the UK and Iceland. He studied at the Guildhall School of Music in London and also has a Master’s degree from the University of Essex. He brings these experiences to his performances but mostly describes his music as “jazz with a French flavor.” He loves harmony, beautiful melodies and the romance of the French style of jazz.

In late 2011, sponsored by the late great jazz guitar legend, Larry Coryell, George relocated to the US from Canada and became active in the Central Florida music scene. He has worked as a solo artist for Disney, has several CDs, works with various recording studios, and travels to Canada where he performs with his six piece band, Bohemian Swing — most recently at the 2017 Toronto Jazz Festival. He is also a composer, song writer, producer and teacher.

In the summer of 2016 George brought together some of his favorite musicians from Central Florida to organize Swing Boutique, a band specializing in what can best be described as “Continental Jazz” – anything from Django Reinhardt to Edith Piaf to musette waltzes.

According to George, the Jazz Society concert will include a mixture of romantic and toe-tapping music with a bit of continental mystery, like a song I wrote called Paris in the Rain which may make you feel like you are walking in  Montmartre.” Don’t miss this lively afternoon of jazz with an international flair and a few dance tunes as well.

All concerts are open to the public – no reservations needed – general admission is paid at the door. $10 for members of the Space Coast Jazz Society and the Rockledge Country Club. Guests $15. Students are free. Food & drinks are available for purchase. Email Jazz@SpaceCoastJazzSociety.org or call (321)960-4897 if you have any questions.
